Located in front of the New Cathedral, the Old General Hospital of Santa Maria is a catalan civil gothic style edifice built between the 15th and 16th centuries. It housed since 1454, a large public and civil hospital, the purpose of which was to amalgamate the seven private existing hospitals in medieval Lleida.

In 1915, the building ceased to function as a hospital and became the property of the Diputació de Lleida. During the Civil War, it became the People's Museum, being managed by the Lleida Culture Commissioner of the Generalitat de Catalunya and used as a deposit where all the confiscated materials carried out by the Government of the Generalitat were entered. Finally, in 1942, the building was again owned by the Diputació de Lleida, which turned it into the Institut d'Estudis Ilerdencs as a new cultural institution.

The establishment also impresses by its architectural beauty. It stands out in the central courtyard, a magnificent stone staircase that leads to the gallery of arches that surrounds the interior of the building. The main facade was presided by a Gothic image of the Virgin Mary, which is currently in the Lleida Museum. Now, stand out the presence of shields with Lleida blazons and spacious rectangular windows that illuminate the two upper floors of the building.

Currently, the Institut d'Estudis Ilerdencs hosts in its rooms, La Gòtika, Zona Zero and Espai iX, art exhibitions scheduled during the year with an approximate duration of one or two months.

A splendid showcase where different artistic manifestations of authors linked to the territory are shown.
