Located a few meters from the train station, the church of Our Lady of Carmel is a modernist building with 18th century characteristics. Its origin is related to the Order of the Carmelites (12th and 15th centuries) when it arrived in Lleida in 1272. The convent where they lived was located at the beginning of the Corbins Way, and then, in 1669, it was moved to Carme street.
The building was destroyed in 1707 and rebuilt after the War of Succession. When the Carmelites were exclaustrated in 1835, the church became the seat of the Parish of Maria Magdalena Saint until 1892, sharing the name and ownership with the church of Our Lady of Carmel. It wasn't until 1922 that it was officially called Parish of Our Lady of Carmel. During the Civil War it was also burned, and in September 1938 it was restored to worship.
Between the years 1953 and 1959 the building was rebuilt by the architect Gabino Lagarriga, thanks in part to the rector Mm. Ramon Torres. With the interior of a nave with tripartite apse, it extends to Rambla Ferran. It preserves from the old temple the access through Carme street and the figures of the Santíssimo, the Pilgrim Virgin of Carmel and the Christ of the Holy Crucifixion.
The altar is presided over by the image of Our Pirglim Lady of Carmel, venerated in the church since 1786; is a 2.40m gilded cedar wood carving made by Enric Monjo in 1943, a gift from a family to the parish. The mural in the lower part represents the Calvary scene made by Víctor Pérez Pallarés in 1997.
The facade of Rambla Ferran is made up of a semicircular arch and a cross with a wide rosette. Josep Maria Bonet's stained glass window recreates Saint Simó Stock receiving the Scapular from Our Lady of Carmel. The other facade facing Carme street shows sgraffitos in the shape of a skylight and bell tower with the coat of arms of Carmel and Our Lady of Carmel, recreation by Ramon Aguiló in 1940 of the original from the 14th century.
The festivities are celebrated on July 16, where the procession event stands out. During the vigil, the image of Our Pelegrine Lady of Carme walks through the streets together with children of the First Communion and parish groups.
