The monumental complex located on the Gardeny hill is a fortified enclosure around a castle erected by the Templar Knights in the Middle Ages (12th - 14th centuries). Transformed for different uses over the years, it has been recovered and now houses a centre of interpretation which helps explain the legacy of the monastic order which established itself there originally.
The panoramic views over the city, the Segre River and the Horta de Lleida (farmland) are certainly privileged. Not in vain the Templars have build there one of the order’s most important castles in the 12th century.
Today, it is possible to visit the building’s remains, with access to its roof and the museum representation of the daily life which went on there when it served as a leading military stronghold.
The Castle of the Templars of Gardeny is an almost essential stop amongst people who love to travel by motorcycle across Ara Lleida Motorcycling routes.
In addition, the Castell dels Templars de Gardeny is the first public monument to have obtained the Biosphere Sustainable Destination certification for having managed to demonstrate compliance with actions aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
