Description

When someone approaches Lleida by any of its access roads, the first thing they see is the Seu Vella, on top of the hill, the higher of the two that characterize the city's skyline. The other hill, Gardeny, is an important part of the history of Lleida. Both hills, together with the river Segre, frame the old city, built around the hill of La Seu, walled until the middle of the 19th century.

The route consists of a visit to two points:

  • Seu Vella
  • Garde Templer Castle

La Seu Vella is the most outstanding building in the monumental complex, and the monument with which, without a doubt, the city of Lleida is identified. La Seu Vella is the old cathedral of Lleida and is made up of the different spaces that once constituted the cathedral: the church with its chapels, the cloister, the bell tower and the canonry.
It was built in medieval times and for about five hundred years was the cathedral of Lleida. In 1707, as part of the War of the Spanish Succession, it was closed to the cult by order of Philip V and soon afterwards transformed into a military barracks.

The Templar Castle of Gardeny is one of the most outstanding witnesses of the Templar architecture built in Catalonia during the second half of the twelfth century, although between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries profound modifications were made that altered the ancient appearance of the whole. medieval. The buildings that can be visited are, on the one hand, the tower-room, the tower of homage and the Romanesque church of Santa Maria de Gardeny.
The visit includes a screening of an audiovisual about the origins of the Templar communities, the rules that governed them and the particularities of the Templar House of Gardeny.

You need your own bus / vehicle to get from one hill to another.
