Description

The city has a pedestrian street full of historic buildings and shops, Carrer Major, one of the longest in Europe. It is also one of the most historic monumental itineraries in the province of Lleida. This guided route follows this street, the city's old Via Augusta, until it crowns the Seu Vella hill.

The Tourist Information Office, located in the middle of Carrer Major, becomes the meeting and starting point for this cultural walking route through Lleida. With the help of a local guide, secret corners and legends will be revealed in order to discover the origins of the city of Lleida.

It starts with the Chapel of Sant Jaume, where the legend of Romeo's Foot and its devotion to Saint James is explained. Then we visited the interior of the New Cathedral - seat of the Bishop of Lleida - of baroque style and, inside which hides an image of "La Moreneta", the Verge del Blau (or Bruised Virgin), the patron of Catalonia. The Gothic building of the old Santa Maria hospital with a magnificent central courtyard will be the next stop. We also approach to the Blondel Avenue and Saint Francesc Square, where the church of Sant Pere and Casa Melcior stand out. Next, the Palau de la Paeria – seat of the municipal government – will be explained, which has on one side, a romanesque facade and, on the other, a neoclassical one. Near the Paeria, we will cross the Arc del Pont, the old city's gate, where the Ilerget leaders as Indíbil and Mandoni are located.

And to enjoy the best views of the city, the tour ends with an outside visit to the most emblematic monument of Lleida, La Seu Vella, the old cathedral or the Castle of Lleida.
