The church of Sant Llorenç is of romanesque origin but with gothic extensions and reliefs (12th - 15th centuries). It was the cathedral of Lleida on two occasions, from 1707, during the War of Succession when king Felipe V closed the Seu Vella to worship to turn it into a military barracks, until 1781 when the New Cathedral was inaugurated, and after the Civil War, from 1940 to 1956.

It consists of three naves with the same height: the central one, the oldest and widest, is romanesque with a pointed vault, and the other two gothic ones with semicircular apses are covered with simple and fanned cross vaults. At the foot of the central nave is the oldest door that preserves the temple which was considered the entrance for the brides while the main entrance was the one that leads to Sant Josep square.

During the 14th century, the Santa Bárbara nave of the Sant Llorenç square was built, and at the beginning of the 15th century, that of Santa Úrsula faced to Sant Josep square. Both were made thanks to the Gallart family, and that is why their coat of arms with the representation of a cock can be found in different places in the temple, such as the two coats of arms of Berenguer de Gallart on the southern gothic door from Sant Josep square. It is also at this time that the belfry is erected, also Gothic and with an octagonal base with two bodies: the lower plain and the upper one with bells and pointed arched windows with traceries. This was restored in 2001 with the hand-crafted reproduction of the openings of the railing and the original gargoyles.

Inside the temple, stands out the crypt, formerly with the function of an underground chapel, is located under the main apse, that contributes to the fact that the presbytery is elevated with respect to the nave; and four Gothic altarpieces, the one of Sant Llorenç attributed to the sculptor Bartomeu de Robió, the one of Santa Úrsula, attributed to Jaume Cascalls, Sant Pere and Santa Llúcia. Also of note are the sculptures of the Virgin of the Fillols, from Seu Vella, the Virgin of Saidi, and a gothic painting from the 15th century, Santa Maria de la Candelera, attributed to the painter Mateu Ferrer, which represents Saint Blaise. The church houses the tomb of Ramon de Tàrrega and Sant Crist Trobat, an image restored by Jaume Perelló.
